[4.28.16] Unity Thursday

Time for some more THURSDAY fun with the Unity design team.  If you haven’t been hopping along, all the action starts on the Unity blog.  I’m sharing some of my favorite cards from April today.

I went crazy with the Copics this month.  I had a coloring sesh.  True story, I was just about done coloring the owl’s little heart when my dog walked by and her tail hit my paper.  It caused my paper to move and a lovely red line across his belly. UGH!  I about cried (ok, maybe I didn’t cry, but I did curse, a lot!).  I spent a LONG time coloring him and just couldn’t do it again.  So, I took a deep breath and went on with finishing the background and flower.  Maybe I can fix it.  I decided it wouldn’t hurt to try and fix his belly and maybe I can “push” that red line into the paper and cover it up with some more brown.  I used a lot of the lightest brown to push the red down, let it dry in between and as soon as it “disappeared”, I recolored his belly again.  Can you believe that it worked?  I couldn’t.  He belly was actually around the color of his eyes before I started the cover up, so it did take a bit of working but it was fixable.  I almost tossed it away!  I hope if you find yourself in the same situation, you give it a shot before you toss.

The other two were colored without a hitch.  I don’t think I could have handled another mishap, even though I still remained on the couch in the danger zone to finish my coloring.  Ha.

[4.3.16] Assemble This! Sketch No. 3

Happy April friends… time to play with a new Assemble This Sketch.  It’s a pretty one and I’ll hope it will spark lots of inspiration.

dahlhouse designs | assemble this sketch no. 3

Lots of options again.  Something circular in the center… layered or not layered.  Up to you.  Then something on half of the card in the background.  I’m thinking either patterned paper, a background stamp or dry embossing.  These are just a few things that popped into my head.  Shall we see what happened?

I decided to go for the gold with this sketch.  I’ve had this DCWV paper pad forever and I’m bound and determined to make some cards with it.  I created the split background with two different patterned papers and then layered my sentiment over the paper doily.  So easy peasy.

Ready to see my gold embossing in action.  Here is the Assemble This! video, you can also watch it on YouTube HERE as well. I’m keeping them short and sweet and under 2 minutes.  No jibber jabber, just creativity in action.  Hope you enjoy.

Add your link below…  I’d love for you to share with me if you use the sketch and if you want to visit each other too. That would be fun.  I’ll close the link up at the end of the month so we can get prepared for a new one next month.

[3.31.2016] Unity Thursday

It is the END of the month and the Unity design team is HOPPIN’.  If you haven’t been hopping along, all the action starts on the Unity blog.  I’m sharing all the cards I’ve made this month using the fabulous new releases for March.  There are quite a few, so bear with me and most of all, I hope you enjoy.

Up first, these unbearably adorable cards.

This happy guy comes from the Yippee Skippy set.  So great for kids and adults alike.  By adding a simple birthday greeting from the So Glad You Were Born sentiment kit, I’m all set for my one of my littles birthdays.  I have a quick video for this guy on how to create the “fur” texture using Copic markers.  You can watch it below or at YOUTUBE.

Since I used Mr. Skippy, I had to use Bear-ly Enough too.  Inside I’ll stamp a birthday greeting.  I have another quick video showing how I created the SUPER easy, SUPER quick grass and sky background.  You can watch it below or at YOUTUBE.

This has to be one of the sweetest little butterflies ever.  I just adore it.  It deserved to be the star of the card, so I colored it in a bold teal color with a hint of pink using Copic markers.  My favorite thing to do with butterflies is to pop up the wings.  It adds so much dimension.  Plus, with this technique, when you mail the card the wings will lay flat and can be fluffed back up once received.  I have another quick video on how to create those popped up wings below or you can watch it at YOUTUBE.

dahlhouse designs | 3.2016 great day

My last two cards use the March 2016 sentiment kit Sometimes I Wonder.  Secretly, this is one of my most FAVORITE sentiment kits I’ve designed.  Just something about those flowers and bird that I really, really love.  I had some fun sneaking in some silly sentiments as well.  Both cards are colored with watercolor – the top vase is done with Distress Inks and a waterbrush, the bottom bird was done with Kuratake Gamsai Tambi watercolors and a paint brush.  Two totally different mediums, but both with beautiful watercolor results.

It has been a long post, thanks for hanging in till the end.

[3.6.2016] Assemble This! Sketch No. 2

Assemble This! Sketch No. 2

Ok, so were did February go?  I did not intend to go so long before the next sketch.  Yikes, the whole month got away from me.  So let’s kick March off with a bang and a sketch.

dahlhouse designs | assemble this sketch no. 2

This sketch is so full of possibility.  I’m just giving you the basic layers.  That big, white open box could be filled with so much or nothing at all.  That intrigues me with what you come up with.  You have free reign on sentiment placement.  It could be in that box, below the layers, popped up in tag or some amazing die cut.  It would be interesting to flip on its side too.  Hmmmm, I may have to play with this one again.  Lol.

dahlhouse designs | 2.2016 lovely day

I went pretty straight forward and filled that box with stamped images.  I had this adorable fox to play with.  He is stamped on watercolor paper and then I used my basic watercolor set to color him in.  At the end, I decided to go over him with a black pen to help the details of the stamp pop.  The texture of the watercolor paper muted the outline.

If you are interested in watching me watercolor, this is my process on how I colored the stamped image as well. It is much longer, but coloring takes a long time and it is hard to edit down.  You can also watch it on YouTube HERE as well.

[2.25.16] Unity is Hoppin’

Unity Thursday

The Unity design team is hopping today.  If you haven’t been hopping along, all the action starts on the Unity blog.  There’s always fun stuff going on.  I have lots to share today.  I’ve been busy playing with the new releases from this month.

First, I have a few cards using the cute new sentiment kit for February.

dahlhouse designs | 2.2016 someone like you

I pulled out one of my favorite paper pads to make these three cards.  I love the mint, pink and yellow combo.  So yummy.  I’ve colored those sweet little cakes with Copic markers and then paired them with some fun die cuts.  For the last one, I created a shaker card using my Fuse Tool.  A party all in one little card.

And then of course I had to play with these adorable pandas too.

Super quick and easy.  Just layered some patterned papers, cut out the little pandas using the Pixscan mat for my Cameo and popped the little cuties up.  One for a girl and one for a boy.
