I love finding a completely different way to use a stamp than the one I first imagined. This new Unity Stamp Company stamp set started as one layered Halloween card, then a few little cuts turned the same image into something totally different. The two cards ended up with completely different looks, even though they started with the same stamp.

Hanging with the Patterns

For this first card, I wanted to let the spider be the star. I stamped, colored, and fussy cut the image just as it was designed, then popped it up over layers of patterned paper for lots of depth. The postage-style die cuts, torn corner, and peek of plaid keep your eye moving around the card, and I love how every layer adds another little surprise without feeling too busy.
Copic Colors: N1, N4, N6

One of my favorite finishing touches is the bit of glitter on the spider. It catches the light just enough to make him stand out even more. I also tucked the fussy-cut sentiment right inside the web pattern, which makes it feel like it was always meant to be there instead of floating on top. It is a small detail, but those are often the ones that pull a card together.

Crawling Out of the Pattern

This is where I started looking at the stamp a little differently. Instead of using the whole spider, I trimmed away the bottom of the body and reattached the legs so it looks like he is crawling right out of the patterned paper. It completely changes the feel of the image and makes the stamp look like part of the design instead of something sitting on top.
Copic Colors: V15, V17

A little purple marker helped blend the reattached legs into the body so everything felt more connected. The popped-up sentiment gives the card another layer, and those few purple enamel dots were just enough to carry the color through the design without adding too much.

Before you reach for a new stamp set, take another look at the one already on your desk. A few simple changes might be all it takes to create something completely different. Have you ever trimmed apart a stamped image to make it work in a new way, or is this a technique you would like to try?
