What’s the BEST Way to Use Leftover Foil?
Do you usually use up your leftover foil right away or set it aside to ‘use later’? I tend to set aside my leftover foil for future use, but then I forget about it. However, today I got inspired by the beautiful butterfly stamp from Unity Stamp Company and came up with a 2-for-1 card design that incorporates both the positive and negative foiled design. The butterfly’s size is perfect for featuring on two cards with a foiled background.
Therm O Web makes toner sheets that work great, but they come with a black background, which doesn’t suit my card design for today. To achieve the desired white background, I am trying out four different products to use the leftover foil on white cardstock.
Join me on my crafty journey and find out which method worked best for me.

Method #1
Can we take a second to admire that gorgeous butterfly? It is so big and detailed. I chose to simply stamp it in black and white but it will look so lovely colored in as well.
All of the initial foiling was done with a piece of pattern paper from Eternal Midnight Weave. It is a simple black and white stripe pattern and I hoped it would react with the DecoFoil. As you can see, it sure did. But then I’m left with the negative and that is where the fun begins.
I started by trying the Artist Tac Adhesive sheets. The micro dot adhesive created a cool distressed look to the foil that I like, but it wasn’t the effect I was going for. I will use it again but for when I want that distressed look.
Method #2
Since I wanted solid stripes, I tried the Easy Cut Adhesive sheets next. While it worked, it was a struggle. These sheets are a bit too strong and I’ll avoid using them for this technique in the future.
Method #3
This is the result of using Spray Adhesive. I do like this method but instead of pulling the foil sheet cover away from the cardstock, I’ll just leave it as is. Tearing away the foil ended up tearing the cardstock. Again a fun distressed look, but not what I was going for. I’ll be using this method again because it was really easy to apply the adhesive and it is strong.
Method #4
Last up is the Transfer Gel. This product is made to be used with DecoFoil and I’ve used it many times before but not with the leftover foiled design. The application takes a little more work, dry time, and clean up, but you can’t deny how lovely it looks. I will use this method again too but make sure I have plenty of time to let it dry completely before foiling.
