I make cards all the time, yet somehow I’m still late sending birthday cards. I can’t figure out how that happens. Haha.

So, I have a fun and quick belated birthday card idea for both of us when we are running behind. I used Unity Stamp Company’s new Eventually Yours stamp set with patterned paper and a few die-cut shapes to create this playful little scene. There is also a quick video so you can watch it all come together.

Cute, Quick, and a Little Late

The patterned paper really set the tone for this card. I pulled the corals, blues, and soft green into the Copic coloring, which helps it blend well with the colors of the background. This little guy didn’t take much for coloring either. It came together really quickly.
Copic Colors:
- Snail: BG11 | BG13 | G24
- Party Blower: R21 | R22
- Present: R21 | R22 | B34
- Ground: W1

Covering the entire card with patterned paper made the snail feel too small, so creating the smaller background gave him more room to stand out.

I used the new Scallops & Ovals die to create the hill, then trimmed it with the postage die so it fit the card better. That simple change made the whole scene work, and it is an easy way to stretch dies beyond their original shape. The die-cut sentiment and tiny clay hearts finished everything off without slowing down this already-late birthday card.
I used a little bit of the scraps from the die-cut layers to decorate the inside with the ‘Happy Birthday’ from Gotta Love Sentiments. You’ll have to check out the video for a peek at that!
What Made This Card Work
- Let the Paper Pick the Colors: Use patterned paper as a starting point for your marker colors. It is an easy way to make the stamped design and background feel connected.
- Trim One Die with Another: A die-cut shape does not have to stay whole. Cutting the oval with the postage die created a custom piece that fit the card better.
- Break Up a Busy Background: When a full patterned-paper background overwhelms a smaller stamp, use the paper in separate sections instead.
- Build a Scene with Simple Shapes: Basic dies can become hills, ground, or layered backgrounds with a little trimming and repositioning.
- Keep Quick Cards Simple: One colored stamp, a few paper layers, and small embellishments can be plenty—especially when that birthday has already passed.
This card came together quickly, but the mix of patterned paper, die-cut shapes, and those tiny hearts still gave it plenty of personality. Perfect for those last-minute got to get it in the mail now kind of cards.
