Quick Watercolor Christmas Card with Classic Charm

I love a Christmas stamp that looks this pretty with just a little color. The sweet house in Unity Stamp Company’s Where Christmas Lives has so many beautiful details, and a few touches of watercolor are all it needs. I kept this watercolor Christmas card simple with torn paper layers and a bit of classic Christmas charm. It’s the kind of card I’d happily make a little stack of for my Christmas list.

Keeping Watercolor Simple

With a detailed stamp like Where Christmas Lives, I like to keep the rest of the card simple. A little color and a few paper layers are plenty. That’s also what makes this a good design for making several Christmas cards. You can enjoy coloring that sweet house without giving yourself a complicated card to assemble afterward.

Distress Watercolor Pencil Colors: Pumice Stone | Ground Espresso | Black Soot | Lumberjack Plaid | Seedless Preserves | Fossilized Amber | Pine Needles | Stormy Sky

I colored the house with Distress Watercolor Pencils, and I think of them much like colored pencils and Gamsol. Draw on a little color, then blend it out with water instead. It really doesn’t take much! I usually work on cardstock and keep the water light. If using water on cardstock feels tricky, watercolor paper gives you more room to play. It can handle more water, and the pigment blends more easily.

The torn layers of The Christmas We Remember patterned paper add that classic Christmas feel I love. I ended up using the sentiment from Stillness & Song. It is such a lovely greeting. I tied a small brass bell into the twine bow, which is adorable but definitely adds some bulk. This one is for handing to someone. If you’re making cards to mail, leave the bell off. A little clear glitter pen on the snow was my last touch, just enough sparkle to finish it off. I promise it is there even though the camera didn’t pick it up. You can see it in the video!

I love how a little color and those torn paper layers gave this sweet house such a cozy Christmas feel. This card has me thinking about which other Christmas stamps would look pretty with just a touch of watercolor. Maybe you have one in your stash that would be fun to try, too!
