Masculine cards can feel a little tricky sometimes, especially when you want them to feel thoughtful without feeling too feminine. Today I’m sharing a rustic woodland design using The Wild Haven from Unity Stamp Company that does exactly that, with layered pattern paper, distressed inking, and heartfelt sentiments that work beautifully for more meaningful cards.

Rustic Masculine Layers

I love the rustic feel of this design. The mix of pattern paper from Found in the Forest and Takin’ Em Fishin’ gives it so much warmth and texture, and the torn tree paper adds that extra little bit of rugged detail. Ink blending around all the edges helped even out the tones and gave the whole card a more distressed woodland look.

I stamped the deer scene from The Wild Haven on lined pattern paper, then die cut it into a label shape and ink blended the edges. That lined paper gives the image such a good outdoorsy vintage feel. I also splattered on mica stain and a little watered-down leftover ink from the blending, then used that same ink to dye some cheesecloth to tuck behind the popped-up label.

One of my favorite things about this design is how easy it is to change the feel just by swapping the sentiment. “You’re exactly the kind of good this world needs” makes it work beautifully for a thank you or encouragement card. Then “A life well lived. A soul well loved.” turns the same layout into a thoughtful sympathy card, which I love because those kinds of sentiments can be harder to find for masculine cards.
Rustic Masculine Cards Tips
- Tear paper for natural texture: A torn edge gives masculine cards a more rugged organic feel and works especially well with scenic or outdoor themes.
- Blend ink across all the layers: Ink blending the edges of each paper helps unify different patterns and tones so the finished card feels cohesive instead of pieced together.
- Stamp on patterned paper: Lined or softly printed paper can give scenic stamps an instant vintage look and adds quiet detail without extra coloring.
- Dye your cheesecloth: Use leftover ink on your work surface to tint cheesecloth so it coordinates with the card and feels like part of the design instead of an afterthought.
- Try other rustic embellishments: If cheesecloth is not your style, try twine, jute, vellum, thin cork, or even distressed or embossed cardstock layers for that same masculine texture.
I really love this kind of rustic outdoorsy look for masculine cards. The layered papers, torn edge, and soft texture work so well together, and the thoughtful sentiments make it even better. Do you have a favorite way to add rustic texture to a card?
