Easy Background Tricks for a Zesty Trio of Cards | July 2026 My Monthly Hero

What is it about lemon cards that instantly feels cheerful? The July My Monthly Hero kit from Hero Arts: You’re the Zest, had me at those big lemon dies. So I made two versions inspired by classic lemonade and pink lemonade that look delicious. And there’s a bonus card at the end with a layered wave background that keeps the easy background ideas going.

Classic Lemonade, Imperfect Texture

This first card has that classic lemonade feel, but the background is what makes it extra fun. The soft blue ink blending got a water-stamped texture using the background in the kit that lifted just enough color to leave a faded, speckled impression. It is subtle, but so good. I also tore the edge of the background before layering it behind the lemons, and I love that little hidden bit of texture peeking out.

Distress Oxide Ink Colors: Broken China, Dried Marigold, Rustic Wilderness

The lemons started as two, but three felt like the right choice once the card came together. The fuller cluster balances the background and gives the whole card more presence without making it feel crowded. A little ink blending on the assembled lemon die cuts added just enough shading to make them pop, and those tiny white flowers are such a sweet finishing touch. Flower centers that look like little buds add a delicate detail I really love. It all really is the ZEST!

Pink Lemonade Twist

For the pink lemonade version, I started with some Bellini (a soft peachy color) cardstock and added just a little ink blending to push it into that pretty pink lemonade direction. Starting with a colored base made the background easier to build, and the water and white splatter gave it that fresh, playful texture. The smaller blended panel frames the lemons beautifully and gives this card a cleaner, more focused look.

The same lemon dies feel totally different here because the background changes the whole mood. I love how the blended shading on the lemons ties both cards together, and I even added a hint of pink to the lemons on this one for that subtle pink lemonade glow. The pink panel, splatter, and tighter layout give this card its own sweet lemonade twist. 

Bonus Card – Riding the Wave

I have a bonus card to share with a fun way to use the kitty and scooter on their own. I did a little doctoring to his arms {just snipped in the center} so I could angle them out to the side. This way he is driving in style.

The background was made by using the hill die from Open Lace Frame and Landscapes. I cut each cardstock color to the same size as my panel and cut the first wave. Without removing the die from the bottom of that wave, I used the cut piece as a guide for the next color. I placed it on top of the next piece of cardstock and ran them through together to cut the top of the next wave. Then removed it to cut the bottom of the wave. I repeated this process for each color, and the pieces fit together cleanly to create one smooth layered background.

Backgrounds do not have to be complicated to make a big impact. A little ink blending, a little water, and a bit of splatter can completely change the feel of a card.

The bonus card carries that same idea in a different way, using layered cardstock waves to build a background with color, movement, and a little extra personality.
